Department aims & ethos

The department firmly believes that all our pupils regardless of ability can benefit greatly from an education in Art & Design. The creative process is seen as the 'all important', regardless of the range of individual outcomes. We fully understand that not all our pupils will go onto be artists or be capable of sophisticated end products, but all with the right encouragement and attitude can develop valuable qualities that will extend beyond the classroom. With the varying capabilities of our students in mind our KS3 and KS4 courses have been organised with a lot of variety and opportunity for each individual to flourish within the subject. We understand the importance that 'development' is the key, and this is emphasised through the progressive nature of skills taught.

The Art Department fully understands the role it has to play in nurturing the SPIRIT qualities that is behind the ethos of learning at Balby Carr Sports College and the town of Doncaster as a whole.

Our department aims are based around such qualities as we look to stimulate, encourage and develop:

Self Confidence
• Students expand their capacity for imaginative and original thought, through experimentation and the production of final pieces.
• Grow in confidence and self-esteem as a result of being able to make a successful personal response to set projects.
• Allow their special aptitudes and individual interests to flourish, whilst fostering a sense of enthusiasm, achievement and adventure.
• Learn to trust their intuition through the creative process, developing a sense of confidence to overcome difficulties and to follow what they feel is right.

Positive Attitude
• Students enjoy their time spent in the department and become fully involved with interesting projects, where they know that ëall can achieveí.
• Look to make the most of extra-curricular opportunities and to enjoy developing classwork/homework in their own time.
• Seek to improve their attainment and skill base, through adopting an open mind to the potential of different materials and techniques.
• Respond to advice positively by allowing different viewpoints to change the direction of work.

Independent Learning
• Students learn to understand the importance of being prepared for work and organise themselves with the basic equipment needed for lessons.
• Expand their ability to structure their own learning and carry out individual enquiry successfully, evidenced both through sketchbook work and the final piece(s).
• Practise and develop skills away from the classroom, so to compound learning and move towards the development of a personal style.
• Develop an increasing knowledge of different artists, sculptors and craftspeople, understanding how their work impacts on their own.
• Respect for Self and Others
• Students develop the capacity to observe and attend to increasingly complex qualities within the external world, showing the ability to respond sensitively to aesthetic qualities in both the natural and man-made world.
• Develop the ability to articulate and communicate ideas, opinions and feelings about their own work and that of others.
• Learn to value and understand aspects of the role that Art has to play and the contribution made by artists within historical, social and multicultural contexts.
• Make connections between Art and its links with industry and careers, understanding progression routes and the possibilities that the subject offers.

Informed Decision Making
• Students use prior skills, knowledge and experience to make progress and to overcome future difficulties and problems.
• Make use of teacher support and one to one tutorials as an important tool in the decision making progress.
• Understand the importance of reviewing their work on a consistent basis, so that projects are continually developing and offering new directions.
• Possess the strength to value all of their efforts and acknowledge that their failures are sometimes just as important as our successes, when influencing decision making.

• All students know their current level of attainment in Art (whether this be an NC level, GCSE or AS/A2 grade) and use this to set themselves realistic and achievable targets.
• Set themselves smaller goals on their way to achieving their new target, so that the target becomes manageable, realistic and surmountable.
• Understand their role in the classroom in establishing a positive atmosphere, where students can ask questions and not be afraid to seek teacher support on the way to achieve their targets.
• Ultimately for the students to understand that by exercising these precise SPIRIT qualities and embracing the department aims then targets will be achieved!
